Describe how the lack of deadlines in a blogging environment can be both a benefit and a detriment for reporters.
What will be an ideal response?
In traditional media, deadlines served as a motivation for reporters to find a story--any story--and finish it in time for publication. If the story wasn’t ready, it would be postponed until the following day, potentially harming the reporter’s relationship with his or her audience. Bloggers, on the other hand, do not have to worry about publication being postponed. When the writer finds something newsworthy, it can be posted online at any time, day or night, even if the information is incomplete and needs to be updated later. This can benefit bloggers by allowing them to get a “scoop” on traditional journalists and post the information online before it reaches print. However, it can also be detrimental if the writer no longer feels the need to be timely with information and falls behind the news cycle, or if the writer hastily posts inaccurate information in the hope of scooping his or her competition. In either scenario, the blogger stand the chance of losing the trust of his or her audience.
