Americans tend to buy produce in bulk since they tend to shop once a week or less. They get produce that is shipped great distances across the country or from abroad. Most produce is not inspected by the FDA. There is increased risk of microbial contamination of the foods.

Europeans shop on a daily basis and get produce from local growers. The produce is not transported long distances and is less likely to be contaminated by the transportation process.
