When treating couples faced with infidelity, what is the first step the therapist should take?
What will be an ideal response?
In general, all couple’s therapies start with individual sessions. In these sessions, the therapist
should determine if both partners want to work on the marital relationship. Sometimes, therapy can be
used as an exit strategy; one side wants to leave the relationship, but instead of doing it immediately, he
or she proposes therapy in order to display his or her (insincere) commitment to staying in the
relationship. Also, sometimes, one of the partners can explicitly state his or her intention to leave the
relationship. If that is the case, the therapist should emphasize that therapy is not likely to be
productive. If both partners display commitment to the relationship and willingness to solve problems,
the therapist can continue by addressing their irrational beliefs and helping them accept the change that
happens in the relationship.
