Define cohabitation and describe how it affects marriage.

What will be an ideal response?

Vary. Cohabitation is defined as sexual partners, not married to each other, but residing in the same household. Cohabiters tend to be younger (half are between 18 and 24). Not all cohabitations lead to marriage and may instead serve as alternative forms of marriage. The percentage of marriages that began as cohabitating relationships has risen between the 1980s and 2000s. Cohabiting and unmarried childbearing have co-occurred. The text cites a research study by Whitehead and Popenoe that concludes that women who cohabit only with their future husbands do not have a higher risk of divorce.
