Explain why the use of iPS cells for stem cell therapies may be a desirable alternative to the use of either embryonic
stem cells or adult stem cells. What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: Induced pluripotent cell lines may provide an alternative way to develop lifesaving therapies without
the destruction of embryos, but much more research on the use of iPS cells is needed before they can
be used in treatment. In addition, a research team created iPS cells from mouse cells and used them to
generate fertile adult mice, suggesting that iPS cells are pluripotent. However, other work shows that
iPS cells may not have the same developmental potential as embryonic stem cells and more research is
needed to determine if iPS cells are equivalent to embryonic stem cells.
