Describe separation anxiety. When does it occur?

What will be an ideal response?

Separation anxiety is the degree to which babies become upset when their trusted caregiver leaves. Attachment is the strong affectionate tie babies have with special people in their lives that leads them to feel pleasure when they interact with them and to be comforted by their nearness in times of stress. Babies typically display separation anxiety in the "clear-cut" attachment phase from 6–8 months to 18 months–2 years. By the second half of the first year, infants have become attached to familiar people who have responded to their needs. However, like stranger anxiety, separation anxiety does not always occur; it depends on infant temperament and the current situation. In many cultures, separation anxiety increases between 6 and 15 months. By the end of the second year, rapid growth in representation and language permits toddlers to understand some of the factors that influence parents' coming and going and to predict their return. As a result, protests to separation decline.
