Collect the most recent data from Accor accounts on its website and update the analysis. Critique Accor’s strategic performance in recent years, highlighting impressive aspects and matters for concern. Compare it with some of the hotel groups it lists as competitors.
What will be an ideal response?
Accor’s financial performance peaked in 2007. In 2009 it demerged hotel and other service
operations. Hotel revenues dropped somewhat in 2009 versus 2008 but it achieved 8% growth in
2010. However 2010 EBITDA and net profit before tax at €446 and €334 millions respectively
remained well below 2007 levels (€1390 and €1146, respectively). It has continued to expand
judiciously, increasing its commitment to growth markets in the Far East. Its 2010 annual report
provides a comparison with key competitors based on share prices. If these are the criterion for
success, Accor’s performance does not compare particularly well with median values of cited
competitors (overleaf). However, the class might be invited to debate if this is the most relevant
performance indicator.
