Why does there seem to be a link between smell and memory?

Olfactory pathways branch off from the olfactory cortex pathway and lead to parts of the limbic system (amygdala and hippocampus) involved with emotion and memory. It is not clearly understood, but because odors are processed through the limbic system, olfactory memories are created. When the smell is encountered again, it acts as a stimulus for both the olfactory pathway as well as the memory pathway (via the limbic system).
