As the therapeutic recreation specialist helps the individual to improve functional abilities and improve leisure-related attitudes, skills, knowledges, and abilities, the client begins to voluntarily engage in self-directed leisure behavior. Therefore, functional intervention, leisure education, and recreation participation are ways to improve personal competence and a sense of accomplishment which are consistent with constructs of self-efficacy and locus of control.
