• Since IBM first began to experiment with job redesign in 1943, programs have been implemented in numerous work settings. Kelly suggests that three approaches to work redesign have emerged.
• First, job redesign efforts may focus on job elimination. During this process, assembly lines may be eliminated or tasks deemed non-essential would be stricken. This may or may not result in a loss of workers.
• Second would be job enlargement which entails the organization adding additional responsibilities to a particular work group. For example, at Texas Instruments, maintenance workers were asked to not only provide custodial care and cleaning, but also to work on preventative maintenance as well.
• Third is job enrichment, a process in which new tasks or specializations may be added to certain work positions. An example of job enrichment would be when a company creates autonomous work groups within which workers troubleshoot problems and identify solutions.
