Explain and differentiate between a main effect and an interaction.

Main effects test differences between the overall levels of a factorial (through the marginal means) and the interaction tests whether differences across the conditions for one level differ from the condition differences for the other level(s). In other words, the interaction tests whether the effect of one factor depends on the level of the other factor.
