Imagine that you are Aaron Beck and a client has come to you for treatment of depression. Describe the focus of your efforts. How would your approach differ from that of your contemporary, Albert Ellis?

If you were Carl Rogers, would your approach be any different? If so, how? Finally, explain how a proponent of biomedical therapy would treat depression.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Cognitive therapists help clients correct faulty patterns of thinking by substituting more effective problem solving techniques. RET is a comprehensive system of personality change based on transformation of irrational beliefs that cause distressing, highly emotional reactions and undesirable behaviors. Rogers' approach is client-centered, nondirective, reflective, and based on unconditional positive regard and the belief that all people strive for self-actualization. Biomedical approaches focus on brain changes and resulting behavior changes and changes in emotional and thought patterns brought about by drug therapies, psychosurgery, rTMS, and ECT.
