While Drosophila has X-Y sex determination, where XX individuals are female and XY individuals are male, studies have shown that sex determination is based on the ratio of X chromosomes to autosomes rather than on Y-linked genes. Thus, XO Drosophila develop as males and XXY Drosophila develop as females–the same X : autosome ratio as XY and XX individuals.
