Explain how advertisers promote gender expectations, and how they challenge stereotypes.
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Advertisers sell products by presenting idealized images of women that are impossible for most to obtain. The implicit-and sometimes explicit-message is that if you use a particular product you, too, will look like the gorgeous woman depicted in the ads. The sexual imagery in these ads teach sex roles for women and men, and portray sexual behavior and sexuality as crucial aspects of the life men and women must master to advance in society. Advertisers also challenge gender and sexuality-related stereotypes by changing the message and portraying women as more powerful.
