What has been the response to climate change in Australia and Oceania and why is it an especially important issue for the region?

What will be an ideal response?

Climate change directly threatens many of the island nations of the region with rising sea level. Australia faces prolonged drought due to climate change, and water management issues. All countries have pledged themselves to the Kyoto Accord (Australia changed its position to one of support in 2007). Australia recently approved a carbon tax. New Zealand has pursued a cap-and-trade program and is considering a "flatulence tax" for the methane produced by its cattle production. Many Pacific nations have been outspoken about the need for international solutions to climate change, demanding the action of many developed countries such as Japan and the United States.
