Name and describe the five phases of grief outlined by Elizabeth Kübler-Ross. Provide illustrative examples of each phase. Discuss the limitations of this phase theory of grief.

What will be an ideal response?

The first phase is denial. This is when the person would think the doctors are wrong in their diagnosis, or that the whole situation-their loss of life, or the loss of someone they love-isn't really happening. The second stage is anger and would be indicated by the individual demonstrating anger about their loss. Next comes bargaining, which is when the person tries to make a deal to avoid their loss. The fourth stage is depression, when the person feels sad, hopeless, and helpless. The last stage is acceptance. This is when the person comes to terms and makes some level of peace with the death. Stage models have been criticized as not reflecting the large diversity of responses experienced by people. Further, the stages do not seem linear, and sometimes people do not experience one of the stages at all.
