Where is the circadian clock for sleep and waking located? Give one piece of evidence for this area being involved in circadian rhythms.

What will be an ideal response?

The circadian clock is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus. One piece of evidence for the SCN as the circadian clock is that rats with SCN lesions stop sleeping on a 24-hour cycle and instead sleep in smaller periods throughout the day. In addition, individual cells within the SCN maintain circadian rhythms even in isolation. The SCN's regulation of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland also lends support for the role of the SCN as a pacemaker.
