It also distracts from the need for access to drug treatment and prevention. A 2012 assessment of the Florida welfare drug test law revealed that there were no direct savings for the state; contrary to the laws intent, it did not identify many drug users and had no effect on reducing the number of individuals applying for welfare assistance. The Florida law that was struck down by federal appeals court in 2014; the court ruled that the state failed to demonstrate that drug abuse was more prevalent or unique among TANF clients than in the general population.
