Data is stored in flash memory as a charge on a conductor embedded in an insulator. Data is stored by injecting a charge onto the conductor and data is erased by removing the charge. In both cases, electrons have to go through an insulator and that can cause physical damage. Eventually, the insulator breaks down and the cell fails to work.
