Da piccoli, Mario e Pia andavano a trovare i nonni in Puglia, una regione nel sudovest del paese, proprio sul tallone (heel) dello “stivale” d’Italia. La Puglia confina con il Molise, la Campania, e la Basilicata, ed è situata sui mari Adriatico e Ionio. È una regione agricola, dove coltivano uva, olive, e cereali, ed è anche una meta turistica molto popolare. La gente va specialmente al Gargano, un promontorio che offre belle spiaggie, che si trova sullo sperone (spur) dello stivale. Altri posti popolari nella zona del Gargano sono Ostuni e Alberobello, dove si possono trovare i trulli, un tipo di casa tipico alla Puglia. La regione offre anche delle città di mare ricche di cultura e industria. Dal porto di Bari, il capoluogo della Puglia, e anche da Brindisi, si può prendere la nave per andare in Grecia e altri paesi all’est d’Europa. Taranto, sul mar Ionio, è un altro porto importante. Un tipo di pasta famosa dalla Puglia sono le orecchiette, che prendono il nome dalla loro somiglianza alle orecchie. In realtà, però, la forma viene dall’impronta del pollice sulla pasta nella fase di preparazione. Le orecchiette erano il piatto preferito di Mario e Pia quando andavano in Puglia tutti gli anni.
