You are likely to have gay or lesbian students in your classes, or perhaps students with gay or lesbian parents. What can you do to make your school/classroom less of a hostile environment for such students?
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: Students may cite organizations and associations that have recently called upon schools to become more tolerant of gay and lesbian students. They should focus, however, on what can be done in the classroom or school, including establishing clear guidelines related to name-calling and bullying; setting an atmosphere of respect for different points of view; remembering (as a teacher) to make no assumptions about students' families, and to be sensitive when giving assignments such as “make a Father's Day card”; and acting as a role model to show how all students should be treated with respect. Teachers should remember that silence = assent and they should neverignore slurs directed at gay or lesbian students, even if these slurs happen on the playground or in the hallway.
