Discuss the role of the 14th Amendment in incorporating individual rights to the states.

What will be an ideal response?

For the first 100+ years of the Bill of Rights, the courts took a view that the Bill of Rights applied only to the actions of the federal government and not the states themselves. But starting in the early 1900s, the courts began to use the due process clause of the 14th Amendment along with specific cases brought before it to selectively incorporate the Bill of Rights to the states, starting with the 1st Amendment, then moving on to the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th Amendments and most recently the 2nd Amendment. This pro-cess has taken almost 100 years of case law.
