Describe some key structural characteristic of epithelial tissue that contributes to its function

What will be an ideal response?

Epithelial cells have tight junctions that link cells. These junctions join the plasma membranes of adjacent cells so securely that fluids cannot seep between cells. An epithelium with tight junctions can keep fluid contained within a particular body compartment. This is important for epithelium functioning as a lining.

Epithelial cells are constantly dividing to renew epithelial tissue. This is important for epithelium that provides a protective role as an external covering or in a area with mechanical or chemical stress.

Simple epithelium is one cell layer thick, which is important for it's function in absorption and secretion.

Epithelial cells can form gland and produce secretions, which are important in numerous ways.
