How has the feminine definition of love shaped inter-generational relationships?

Mothers intensely focused love for a child inspires return in the same way. It is not until
boys encounter male norms of expressing love that they pull away from the intimate
expressions, and turn to more instrumental ways of loving. Girls continue to be expressive,
and pass that to their children. Women also practice expressive love in kin work with
elders, another dimension of expressive love. Men tend to give materially, but not
expressively to their elders.
