Compare and contrast the Italian and the Northern Renaissance.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary; the Italian Renaissance started earlier and had a greater influence from the arrival of recent refugees from Constantinople. The culture of patronage and humanism took more of an artistic mode in Italy, and the sponsorship of arts created more of a cultural demand for consumer goods. The Northern Renaissance was much more of a literary phenomenon, assisted by the development of the printing press. Painting in Flanders also made its mark, using colors and light to achieve the effects of perspective and painting in oil rather than tempera. The Flemish artists benefitted from the techniques that the Italians developed, but they adapted those techniques and furthered their own techniques based on their own very different society. The framing of paintings was also a major difference between Flemish and Italian painters: the Italians used a frame to denote a separation between subject and viewer, while the Flemish painters sought to draw the viewer into the same perspective as the subjects.
