Why is the admission of Turkey into the EU problematic for some?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. There has been significant debate about what criteria need to be met for nations to be admitted to the European Union, and how much the EU should expand. Turkey has been a test case on several measures. Turkey is a member of NATO and had a functioning democracy long before the application and inclusion of any postcommunist state of eastern Europe that has been admitted based on embracing democratic principles and participating in economic reforms. What has become an issue for debate is what it means to be European in terms of culture, ethnicity, political structure, geographic location, and lifestyle. Many see Turkey as a Muslim nation that is not and never really has been part of the European mentality because it was the center of the Ottoman Empire for more than 500 years. Others are concerned about militant Muslims within Turkey and how this would affect the overall percentage of Muslims in the EU. Others fear that Turkey will turn more toward the Middle East if it is not included in the EU, and this could potentially aggravate the international political system.
