Why is it especially important that some echinoderms, like the sea stars, maintain an aboral surface free of debris and settling larvae?
What will be an ideal response?
Sea stars rely on a water vascular system for their locomotion, feeding, respiration, and excretion. In order to function properly, the water vascular system has to have a constant flow of water entering through the madriporite on the aboral surface. Because of this, sea stars must keep the area around the madriporite free of debris, which they do using pedicellariae.
