In studying transitions, why is it necessary to focus on the advantages to individuals before the transitions and not the group advantage?

What will be an ideal response?

ANS:
Natural selection operates on individuals. If there is not an advantage to the individual to join a group, natural selection will not favor group formation. Thus, even if the group has an advantage, the individual is more important before it joins the group.
