Compare and contrast bottom-up processing and top-down processing, and provide an example of each.

What will be an ideal response?

Bottom-up and top-down processing are opposites of each other, but they are similar because they are both involved in sensory processing and can affect our perceptions. A correct answer would mention these similarities and contrast the direction of information processing. Bottom-up processing involves starting at the bottom, with little pieces of information, and building perceptions as you move up to higher levels of processing. An example would be seeing a type of flower you have never seen before. You process the parts of the flower (the petals, leaves, etc.), and you build the perception of the flower as you move to higher levels of processing. Top-down processing starts with the larger picture associated with expectations and past experiences, which affect how you take in information from your senses. An example would be witnessing a crime: When you report the characteristics of the thief, expectations and past experiences you have had, or images you have seen of criminals, will affect the parts of the visual scene you notice and the final perception you have, and report to the police.
