It was possible to overlap various components of artwork, but once you deselected, those components would become embedded in the canvas. So, if a montage was created in Photoshop 2.0, all of the elements would have existed on one canvas, one bed of pixels. Imagining that scenario, the true benefit of working with layers is the options to edit, rethink, and redesign.
