The textbook identifies five different types of children: Popular (liked by many classmates), rejected (disliked by many classmates), controversial (both liked and disliked by classmates), average (liked and disliked by some classmates, but without the intensity of popular, rejected, or controversial children), and neglected (ignored by classmates) children.
Popular children – like to be skilled academically and socially, and are typically either good students who are cooperative or are physically or relationally aggressive.
Rejected children – typically hostile, socially unskilled, and lack emotional regulation. May also be shy, withdrawn, timid, and lonely.
