Glipizide (Glucotrol), a sulfonylurea, is prescribed for W.V.'s hyperglycemia. W.V. asks if this
means he is now a diabetic. How would you answer him?
What will be an ideal response?
"The reason your glucose is elevated is that it is a side effect of the antirejection medications you are
taking to protect your new kidney. In some transplant patients, the side effects of these medications
affect the pancreas so that it no longer produces enough insulin to metabolize carbohydrates and
glucose properly. About half of the people with NODAT are diabetic temporarily while they are
taking the high levels of medications. Because your glucose is high, the physician will reduce the
doses of the medications as quickly and safely as possible. Often, once the medication levels are
reduced, the body recovers and there is no need for diabetes medication. However, some people
will remain diabetic for the rest of their lives. If you still require diabetes medication for longer than
1 year, this may be the case for you. At that point, if you do have diabetes permanently, we will help
you learn how to take care of your health."
