Explain how progressive or deep muscle relaxation works and how it was developed

?Progressive or deep muscle relaxation (PMR) involves a physical component-usually the tensing and relaxing of various muscle groups in the body in a sequential pattern-and a mental component-focusing on the distinction between the feelings of tension and relaxation. A physician named Edmund Jacobson developed PMR in the early 1920s to help patients relax their muscles before surgery so they would respond better and recover more quickly. Since muscle tension accompanies anxiety, he theorized that learning how to relax the muscles could reduce anxiety. Jacobson spent more than seven decades documenting the effectiveness of PMR as a preventive measure to reduce stress and as part of the treatment for problems such as hypertension and insomnia.
