Mr. Hughes is creating a unit test. He is trying to decide whether to use an essay format or selected-response. Describe each format and indicate the advantages and disadvantages of each.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Essay tests provide opportunities for students to give written responses to test questions. Students must articulate their thinking and have the opportunity to explore each question at a greater depth. Because each essay question takes longer to answer, essay tests should not be used if a great deal of material needs to be covered. Essay questions also are time-consuming to grade. Selected-response questions ask students to choose the best answer of those provided. Selected-response tests are easy to grade and can be used when lots of questions need to be asked to assess understanding of a wide range of information. However, students may guess answers to test items. Further, it is difficult to determine why students missed certain questions because they do not have the opportunity to explain their thinking.
