The Kongo king Nzinga aNkuwa converted to Christianity and was baptized as Joao I and his son and heir declared it to be the state religion. The tribe was susceptible to the message of Christian because they, too, traditionally accepted the duality of the universe and the existence of an afterlife. The tribe adapted the outward forms of Christianity to their own cultural practice.
