Tocqueville observed that Americans were religious. Today, Americans are much more likely to believe in God, pray on a daily basis, and acknowledge clear standards of right and wrong than the typical European. Religious people are much more likely to donate money to charity and donate time to nonreligious organizations. Religious ideas fueled the Revolution and were central to the struggle over slavery and the temperance movement. Both liberals and conservatives have used the pulpit to promote political change. The importance of religion can be seen in candidate behavior (supporting delivery of social services by religious organizations) and public reaction to the attempt of a federal court to ban the "Pledge of Allegiance."
