What teaching needs will you review with R.M. with regard to her medication?

What will be an ideal response?

• Take one pill every day at the same time of day, preferably on rising. It should be 30 to 60 minutes
before mealtime, such as breakfast.
• If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember it, unless it is almost time for the next dose.
• Review the other medications she is taking and assess if she uses any complementary therapies.
If any are known or thought to interfere with Synthroid's action, have her separate their use from
Synthroid by 4 hours.
• Do not discontinue this drug or change brands without consulting the provider.
• Report any heat intolerance, nervousness, excitability, profound weight loss, chest pain, diarrhea,
irritability, and irregular or fast pulse (a rate over 100 beats/min) to the provider immediately.
• Stress the importance of keeping follow-up appointments for lab work.
• Tell her to talk with her provider if she desires pregnancy, as pregnancy will affect the dose of
hormone required.
