Why is the traditional nuclear family an inadequate representation of American families today? Give an example of what a standard American family might look like today instead.

What will be an ideal response?

The structure of the family has changed dramatically over the years. Higher divorce rates (42–48%), births to unmarried mothers (40%), single-parent homes, grandchildren living with grandparents, and homeless have changed the look of the American family. A truer look of what an American family might look like today includes children living in single-parent homes (with more children living with single mothers than fathers) and working with single-mother families. Other families may include blended (step) families, same-sex couples with children, adoptive and foster families, and families with dual-earning (working) parents.
