The next patient on the operating list requires contact precautions to be used. Describe how you will prepare the operating room and yourself to manage the patient

What will be an ideal response?

Answer:
Ensure that adequate supplies of personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves and aprons are available as part of standard precautions and routine preparation of the room at the commencement of the list.
The room should not require any additional preparation, as excessive supplies or equipment should not remain in the theatre after each patient.
During any contact with the patient (e.g. positioning, transferring to and from the operating table), an impervious gown and gloves should be worn by all staff involved in these activities. On completion of these actions the protective attire should be removed and disposed of correctly prior to touching other surfaces or equipment in the room, such as the contents of the anaesthetic trolley, computer or phone. A moment of hand hygiene is required prior to donning and removing gloves.
Some facilities may place a sign on entry points to the operating room to remind staff that contact precautions must be observed when in contact with the patient. A special trolley containing protective gowns and gloves may be placed outside the operating room so that staff can easily access protective equipment.
