Examination of the male breasts is completed in essentially the same manner as that of the female breast. Inspect the chest wall, noting the skin surface and any lumps or swelling. Palpate the nipple area for any lump or tissue enlargement. It should feel even, with no nodules. Squeeze the nipple to examine for discharge. The normal male breast has a flat disk of underdeveloped breast tissue beneath the nipple. Having the patient lean forward is usually not necessary unless gynecomastia is present.
