Explain why the stiffness of the subfloor is more important for ceramic tile or natural stone floor covering than for vinyl tile or carpet floor covering.

What will be an ideal response?

Natural stone or ceramic tiles are both brittle materials. As such, they cannot withstand much bending. If the subfloor is not sufficiently stiff, i.e., it bends (or yields) under foot traffic, brittle floor coverings will crack and break. Although a stiff subfloor is desirable for all floor coverings, flexible floor coverings, such as vinyl tile or
carpet, are better able to withstand the bending of the subfloor.
