The Greeks saw all human activity as a competition and glorified winners as individuals who strived for greatness, both for personal satisfaction as well as the greater prestige of the polis. It is characteristic of the mentality that focused on humanism, rather than religious devotion, as the central point of life. Greeks competed in war, athletics, politics, and intellectual discovery processes, and these competitions determined not only social status, wealth, and power, but they were also held as a standard value of individual effort. Crucial to that competitive spirit is the concept of aret , or personal excellence. It was not sufficient merely to achieve victory; one had to see the opposition defeated and humiliated.
