The measurement structure of the group research design that is labeled the posttest-only research design is that a single group of clients are measured on the target behavior only at the end of the treatment period. Describe the measurement structure of each of these research designs: (1) the one-group pretest–posttest design, (2) the comparison group design, and (3) the alternative treatment design.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: For the one-group pretest–posttest design, a single group of clients are measured one time before treatment begins and one time at the end of treatment. For the comparison group design, a group of clients are measured before and after the treatment and their gain in functioning on the target behavior is compared to the same for a comparison group of people who did not get the treatment. The alternative treatment design is similar to the comparison group design except that, for the alternative treatment design, one group is given one treatment and their gain on the target behavior is compared to the same for a second group that received an alternative treatment. The results provide information on whether one treatment was more effective than the other.
Learning Objective: 14-5: Describe various group research designs such as the one-group posttest-only design, the one-group pretest–posttest design, the comparison group design, the alternative treatment design, the basic experimental design, the posttest-only control group design, and the Solomon four-group design.
