What place do writing prompts have in a classroom?

What will be an ideal response?

When students are writing independently, they should be willing and able to come up with their own topics. However, when you are writing with students, it is often appropriate to offer prompts and assignments that stretch them out of their comfort zones and push them to explore ideas they may not have chosen independently. Giving prompts and assignments does not mean that you give students no choice. Often within the bounds of a prompt or a list of possible assignments there is still room for student choice, which is linked closely with student motivation.
