Cognitive theories can be useful to social workers as we look at the various ways they conceive of client thought. Cognitive theory can help us to work with people at different life stages, understanding the underpinnings of their thinking patterns. Social learning theory can help us understand seemingly illogical human behavior, by looking at it as an effort to avoid pain or maximize pleasure (even if perhaps more immediately focused than long-term).
