Durkheim emphasized that, while the primary domain of psychology is to understand processes internal to the individual (e.g., personality or instincts), the primary domain of sociology is “social facts”: that is, conditions and circumstances external to the individual that, nevertheless, determine that individual’s course of action. As a scientist, Durkheim advocated a systematic and methodical examination of social facts and their impact on individuals. Individual students’ answers will vary but each should identify some power, force, or institution within his or her own life which plays a part in how he or she acts, feels, or thinks.
