Explain how self-energizing brake shoes work on a primary-secondary system.

What will be an ideal response?

When the brakes are applied, the wheel cylinder forces the upper end of brake shoes outward into contact with the rotating drum. When the primary shoe contacts the drum the rotation of the drum tends to rotate both shoes causing the lower end of the primary brake shoe to push against the secondary shoe through the star wheel adjuster. This causes the lower end of the secondary shoe to wedge further into the drum applying a greater force on the brake drum, than the force provided by the wheel cylinder.
