What are the historical roots of American common law?
What will be an ideal response?
The laws of the U.S. and England stem from the common law of England. When the 13 colonies were established in America, they adopted the common law of England, but when the U.S. was formed, its law developed separately from the English common law tradition. Today, statutory law dominates the criminal law system of the United States, but common law still influences the criminal law system.
