Explain what a chain of custody is, what information is contained, and why it is important
What will be an ideal response?
Chain of custody refers to the record of individuals who have maintained control over the evidence from the time it was obtained by the police to when it is introduced in court. At a minimum, it would contain details regarding the collection of the evidence from the crime scene, the storage of the evidence in the police evidence room, and the transfer of the evidence to court for trial. The chain of custody is necessary to ensure the physical security of evidence. If the chain of custody is broken or compromised, the validity of the evidence may be questioned in court.
