Borgny Egeland had two children with intellectual disability. Her daughter, Liv, did not walk until she was nearly 2 years of age and she spoke only a few words. Liv also had a musty odor that could not be washed away. Liv's younger brother, Dag, was also slow to develop and never learned to walk or talk. He had the same musty odor as his sister. To learn what was wrong with her children, she went from doctor to doctor, but to no avail. Finally, in the spring of 1934, the persistent woman took the two children, then ages 4 and 7 years, to Dr. Asbjorn Folling, who was a physician and a biochemist. Folling began the research that led to the discovery of phenylketonuria.
